Top 7 Weekend Rides From Chennai on a Royal Enfield

By Velavan Motorcycles Editorial TeamPublished Updated · 10 min read

Chennai is unusually well placed for weekend riding: coast to the south, hills within four hours to the west, and heritage towns in every direction. These seven routes are the ones our customers ride most often.

Distances are one-way from the city centre. Start times assume you want to beat both traffic and the Tamil Nadu sun.

1. Mahabalipuram via ECR — 55 km

The classic first ride. Smooth tarmac, sea breeze, and enough breakfast stops along the way to make it a social ride. Leave by 6 AM to have the road to yourself, and be back before the afternoon heat.

Best on: Hunter 350, Classic 350. Any bike in the range handles this comfortably.

2. Pulicat Lake via Ponneri — 60 km

North of the city and far less crowded than the ECR. Flat, open roads through salt pans and fishing villages, with excellent birdwatching in the winter months. Roads are narrower, so ride conservatively.

Best on: Meteor 350, Classic 350.

3. Pondicherry via ECR — 150 km

The definitive Chennai weekend ride. Do it as a long day out or stay overnight in White Town. The ECR is in good condition throughout with plenty of fuel and food stops.

Best on: Interceptor 650, Super Meteor 650, Classic 350.

4. Yelagiri Hills — 230 km

The nearest proper hill ride, with a 14-hairpin climb at the end that rewards a torquey engine. Highway to Vaniyambadi, then the ascent. Leave Chennai by 5 AM to reach before the day heats up.

Best on: Himalayan 450, Interceptor 650, Meteor 350.

5. Kolli Hills — 350 km

Seventy hairpin bends and a genuine test of rider concentration. Best done as a two-day trip with an overnight stay. Fuel up before the climb — options at the top are limited.

Best on: Himalayan 450, Guerrilla 450, Scram 440.

6. Tada Falls (Ubbalamadugu) — 90 km

Just across the Andhra border off NH16, with a short trek from the parking area to the falls. Best between August and February when there is water. Carry cash for parking and entry.

Best on: Scram 440, Himalayan 450, Hunter 350.

7. Kanchipuram heritage loop — 75 km

Temple architecture, silk weaving workshops and some of the best filter coffee in Tamil Nadu. A relaxed cultural ride rather than a fast one, and ideal for a pillion.

Best on: Classic 350, Bullet 350, Super Meteor 650.

Ride preparation checklist

  • Carry 2 litres of water per rider
  • Keep your RC, licence, insurance and PUC accessible
  • Save Royal Enfield roadside assistance in your phone before you leave
  • For hill routes, get a pre-ride check done at the service centre

Frequently Asked Questions

For coastal routes like the ECR, the Classic 350 or Interceptor 650 are ideal. For hill routes such as Yelagiri or Kolli Hills, the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450 are better suited thanks to their suspension travel and torque delivery.
